Hey, it is a small quote but the article as a whole is worth reading, as usual Kathy Robertson at the Business Journal has done a great job framing a complex issue. To read the article follow this link:

Thanks for the post Julie, after I read it I realized that I had failed to inform the Forum members that we too have written an article on the subject!
I posted the link for it in our blog but did not here for some reason. So here it is:

There\'s a pretty good article from Watson Wyatt on how companies are actually ramping up their workforce planning efforts during this ecoomic decline, http://www.watsonwyatt.com/news/press.asp?ID=20189.

The State of California recently released an audit they conducted last year which examined ongoing efforts within the State to assure a continued supply of qualified personnel.

We here at FutureDecisions are proud to say we were interviewed for this report. While there is a segment of the report that provides a cautionary note on using consultants we do overall agree with the basic premise put forth in the report. That is, while consultants can assist with training and specific expertise the ownership of the WSP process has to remain with those within the agency.

That has always been our premise here at FutureDecisions, we can assist with getting a client started on the process with education such as our 5 Day Workshop, by sharing our expertise and providing guidance as the plan is designed and implemented. But at some point the client must take over responsibility for the long term success of the program!

To obtain a copy of the report please click the link below.

Hi Maria,
Excellent question and one that is coming up more and more often. What Karen and I are telling people is that while it seems pretty dire at the moment things will get better and when they do it is best to be prepared. Another point that may or may not be pertinent to your situation, we are finding that some public service employees are choosing to retire now instead of later as they are fearful that if they wait their benefits may be reduced by their employer.
Hope that helps, would be interested in what others have to say. BTW, Karen and I are currently finalizing an article on this subject that we will post here when it is complete.

Thanks Kevin and Karen. One way I am preparing to prepare is learning more about Social Learning tools. I feel that creating learning communities is becoming ever more important as the need for knowledge transfer continues to grow. I am not as experienced with these tools as I need to be. I appreciate the opportunity to learn in \"real life\".

Does anyone have any advice on how to encourage agencies/work groups to begin or continue knowledge management, mentoring, or leadership efforts given the current climate? With fewer staff, stretched thin, how can we frame the need to continue workforce/succession planning strategies, such as these three?
