State of California WSP Audit Report

Thursday, March 19th, 2009

The State of California recently released an audit they conducted last year which examined ongoing efforts within the State to assure a continued supply of qualified personnel.

We here at FutureDecisions are proud to say we were interviewed for this report. While there is a segment of the report that provides a cautionary note on using consultants we do overall agree with the basic premise put forth in the report. That is, while consultants can assist with training and specific expertise the ownership of the WSP process has to remain with those within the agency.

That has always been our premise here at FutureDecisions, we can assist with getting a client started on the process with education such as our 5 Day Workshop, by sharing our expertise and providing guidance as the plan is designed and implemented. But at some point the client must take over responsibility for the long term success of the program!

A New Baby Boom?

Thursday, March 19th, 2009

Here is an interesting tidbit of information we recently picked up here at FutureDecisions: The birth rate in 2007 was the highest it has ever been in the history of the United States!

The National Center for Health Statistics tells us that there were 4,317,119 births in the U.S. in 2007 exceeding the previous record set in 1957. Demographers do not expect this number to be exceeded anytime soon, in fact they believe the number will decline as we move forward. They point out that the high birth rate was during a prosperous time and that with the declining economy they expect the birth rate to follow.

Still, we Baby Boomers can no longer lay claim to the most recent “baby boom”, that mantle is now passed on to Gen Y’s and Gen X’ers as these two generations continue to make their mark.

Wow, Here comes the Y’s

Tuesday, March 17th, 2009

Here at FutureDecisions we often speak of the fact that Gen Y’s while being a very large cohort the majority of them are not yet in the workplace. A great demonstration of that can be found in something we recently came across. The most recent high school graduating class is the largest in the history of the United States! The majority of Y’s may not be in the workplace yet but they are coming.

The Hidden Crisis in Public Sector

Monday, March 9th, 2009

We have written an article that we think many of our readers will find of interest addressing the current challenges in keeping organizations focused on Workforce/Succession Planning issues despite everything else going on.

“You cannot read a paper, listen to the news or even have a conversation with a friend without the financial crisis being mentioned.  It is foremost in our minds and keeps some of us up nights wondering how we are going to sort out the mess and how it might impact our businesses and affect us personally.”
